WHAT IS PEP

PEP can stop HIV after a possible exposure

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is emergency medication taken after a possible exposure to HIV. Taken correctly, it can prevent the virus from taking hold in your body.
It is usually one pill a day for about 28 days. It must be started within 72 hours of exposure — ideally within 24.

Simple daily dose

One pill a day for about 28 days.

Start within 72 hours

Ideally within 24 hours of the exposure.

Fully confidential

Your visit and results stay private.

THE 72-HOUR WINDOW

Every hour counts

PEP’s effectiveness drops the longer you wait. Acting quickly gives you the best protection.

STEP 1

Within 24 hrs

The ideal window — protection is strongest when you start early.

STEP 2

Up to 72 hrs

Still effective — but effectiveness declines with each passing hour.

STEP 3

28-day course

One pill a day, taken consistently, for about 28 days.

STEP 4

Follow-up testing

HIV testing after the course confirms your status and peace of mind.

IS PEP RIGHT FOR ME?

When PEP is recommended

If any of these happened in the last 72 hours, contact us right away. No judgment — just care.

Unprotected anal, vaginal, or receptive oral sex with a partner whose HIV status is unknown

Sexual assault — you deserve immediate, compassionate care

Exposure to blood, semen, or genital fluids through open wounds or cuts

Sharing needles, or injury from contaminated needles or blades

A condom that broke, slipped, or was removed during sex

YOUR VISIT

What to expect at your consultation

A calm, private consultation with our doctor — usually under an hour, start to finish.

1. Risk & medical-history assessment

We listen to what happened and assess your level of risk — calmly and without judgment.

2. HIV test before starting

PEP is for people who are HIV-negative, so we confirm your status first with a rapid test.

3. Blood tests for kidney & liver health

A quick check to make sure the medication is safe for you.

4. STD testing if needed

Depending on your exposure, we may recommend screening for other infections.

5. Prescription & follow-up plan

You leave with your medication and a clear plan for check-ins and final testing.

Side effects: usually mild, always temporary

Modern PEP medications are well-tolerated. Some people experience mild nausea, diarrhoea, or loss of appetite — these are temporary and resolve after the course.

Our doctor tailors the regimen to you, so you can complete the full 28 days comfortably.

COMMON QUESTIONS

PEP, answered plainly

Yes. PEP is only for people who are HIV-negative, so a rapid HIV test is done before your first dose. It takes just minutes and is fully confidential.

It’s best to use condoms throughout the 28-day course and until your final follow-up test confirms you are HIV-negative. PEP protects you from the earlier exposure — it doesn’t cover new ones.

If exposure is ongoing or recurring, PrEP — a preventive daily medication — is usually a better fit than repeated courses of PEP. Dr. Tan can discuss whether PrEP suits you.

No. PEP prevents HIV from establishing itself after an exposure — it is not a treatment for existing HIV. That’s why a rapid test is done first. If you test positive, Dr. Tan will guide you to the right care.

Completely. Your consultation, records and results stay private and are shared only with you. Discreet appointments are available on request.

ONGOING RISK?

PEP is for emergencies. PrEP is for prevention.

If you have ongoing or recurring risk of HIV exposure, PrEP — a preventive daily medication — may suit you better than repeated courses of PEP.
